Grown Apart, 16” x 20”, ink, watercolor, gouache.. not that I know how to use any of those things
as the photo makes especially evident
If the dimensions didn’t make it obvious this is one of the RISD challenge pieces, visualizing the invisible. I decided to tell a true story
That’s it for the portfolio pieces, back to regular posting
Cycles
Photo transfer and ink. (The photos were taken by me)
People really like this one. At my calarts review on national portfolio day the lady basically said my entire portfolio was worthless save for this piece, haha
But I don’t really like it… at all… :I
These are the sketchbook pages I submitted with my portfolio. They all have to do with the creation of the comic in my previous post.
1. The original small thing I drew while bored at a restaurant that became the entire comic, Olivia’s changing design (someone insisted that I drop the combat boots) and some less serious things.
2. Haha this brings back a lot of happy memories. SO MANY THUMBS… I did them over a period of two weeks before going to the final surface so that I could vary the panel layouts to keep it interesting. I also wanted to know ahead of time just how much comic the script translated to.
3. An individual thumb page. All of the pages have some notes written on the back of them, mostly small reminders to myself so that I won’t forget what I originally wanted out of the scene. There’s also stupid stuff like toothpaste monsters but you know whatever
Comic page I did for FWOCT’s round 6.
The two things I wanted most to come across are Dawn and Kuta’s relationship and the change from a safe place to an uncomfortable one. I also wanted to make it clear that I hate myself, which is why I choose to draw things like those doors when I don’t have to.
One day I’m gonna remake this so that it matches what I see in my head
Inspired by this place
I feel bad not copy-pasting my slideroom descriptions of my pieces onto here, since I think one of the stronger parts of my portfolio is my ability to talk about why I do certain things in my work, but it’s weird to see such a serious, formal sounding description of some of this stuff.
And for the two people that’ll get the reference (yes that was there the whole time)
a lot on your mind, sophomore-junior summer
//I noticed once that tropical fish hover around reefs the way I imagine thoughts to hover around people
man, this is SO WELL RENDERED, SO WELL RENDERED YOU GUYSSS
Dawn appears a lot in my portfolio
Done during my sophomore-junior summer. It’s got quite a few mistakes but I’m still fond of it.
I guess in this piece I wanted to show that I can work/think in different mediums, and that I spend a lot of time working with my characters… :T
This is easily my least favorite piece, save for maybe my bike piece but I will NEVER upload that because oh god it’s horrible (and I don’t know where the photo of it went, and I don’t care)
I was very determined to draw the portrait part entirely from life AND be the only person in class who followed the instructions, and I think the picture suffers from both. It also photographed badly. I tried to color correct it here, but ehhh.
The medium is oil pastels by the way
I can’t defend putting this in my portfolio
… yeah this one is kind of embarrassing
